If you’re a director with unimpeachable indie credentials, critical love, fan boy worship and studio backing, this is exactly how you’d want to piss it away: with an epic folie de grandeur starring Justin Timberlake, Sarah Michelle Gellar and The Rock.

An apocalyptic tale incorporating the media disease, technophobia, Hollywood and God only knows what else, Southland Tales is a glorious, swaggering old drunk of a movie, stumbling through two hours yelling fragments of abuse at passers by. Is it any good? Pfft. That’s not the point.

It’s a barnstorming David in a world of identikit corporate Goliaths, and if we can’t celebrate that, then we’re definitely all doomed.
