Kelly Slater wins Rip Curl Pro Portugal
The biggest name in surfing sets his eyes on a historic prize.
The current ASPworld number one defeated his closest rival, Jordy Smith, to win the Rip Curl Pro in Peniche, Portugal, yesterday.
The win pushes Slater one step closer to his tenth world title, with only two events, Puerto Rico and Pipe (Hawaii), left on the ASP World Tour.
Now almost 10,000 points ahead of his closest rival, Jordy Smith, Slater would have to perform very poorly at the next two events, and Smith very well, to alter the balance. In fact, Slater could claim victory in Puetro Rico providing he scores relatively highly and Smith doesn't win.
ASP number two, Jordy Smith, said of the final: “I was able to notch up one good one, but couldn’t find a backup. That’s the way it goes sometimes. I’m still happy with the result and the way my year has gone so I’m just staying positive and we’ll see how we end up.”
